ABOUT THE OUTFITTER
Richard Stewart is the owner of RWS Guide Service. He offers coastal brown and black bear hunting on Alaska’s majestic Kenai Peninsula (GMU 15C), as well as Arctic grizzly and barren ground caribou in the foothills of the Brooks Range and the coastal plains of the North Slope (GMU 26A).
ABOUT THE HUNTS
Coastal Brown Bear & Black Bear
The spring coastal brown bear hunts are 1x1, guided, with 7 actual hunting days. Hunters will be staying in Soldotna. The hunter can either rent a car in Anchorage and drive to Soldotna, or fly into Kenai.
We’ll help with acquiring the necessary license, tag, and the free registration permit. Hunters will be picked up at the motel each day, then transport to the hunt area, where we may stay up to 48 hours before returning to town. Hotel accommodations and meals while staying in Soldotna are at the hunter’s own expense. Meals while hunting are provided. A black may be added to the hunt (for a trophy fee) and are typically seen during our brown bear hunt. Rifle hunters are preferred, but we can accommodate bow hunters.
Arctic Grizzly Bear & Caribou
Our fall arctic grizzly and caribou hunts are 7 days, with 2 hunters per guide (2x1), and we can take a total of 8 hunters per season. Open dates are August 3-9, or August 11-17. Hunt cost is $9,500/hunter, plus a field charter flight fee ($1,500/hunter) paid directly to the charter service operator, currently Brooks Range Aviation. Hunters are limited to approximately 50 pounds of gear; the flight is very much weight-limited.
Hunters fly from Fairbanks to Bettles on a commercial flight, approximately $350/person (round trip), run by Wright Air Service.
Hunt cost includes first species (either caribou or grizzly), but a second species can be added for $4,750 (trophy fee). Wolves are frequently seen during this hunt as well. Please note only 1 caribou can be taken in this game management unit by a nonresident. Lastly, while rifle hunters are preferred, we can take bow hunters, but it can be pretty tough in this hunting area.
Fishing
The Arctic char fishing on our Brooks Range hunts is great, assuming we have time.
On our spring Kenai hunts, fishing opportunities for salmon and trout are available, but hunters need to make arrangements with a fishing guide service. We don’t personally provide this activity during our season.
