ABOUT THE OUTFITTER

sam-by-airplane-fejes-guide-service.jpg

Samuel T. Fejes, Jr. was born and raised in Alaska, where he learned to hunt, trap, and fish at an early age. Receiving his pilot’s license in his early 20‘s, Sam has flown Alaska from the Arctic Circle to Ketchikan, and elsewhere throughout Alaska, accumulating over 26,000 hours (with nearly 16,000 hours in a Super Cub alone). Currently, he holds a commercial and instrument pilot’s license, and is rated for single engine land and sea.

ABOUT THE LODGE

tsui-river-lodge-interior-fejes-guide-service.jpg

The Sam Fejes Tsiu River Lodge operates 4 aircraft; 2 Piper Super Cubs, a Cessna 185, and a DeHavilland Beaver to assure your access to those remote strips and high mountain areas, in acquiring your trophy and comfort needs. All aircraft are inspected regularly and up to several times a year, to assure proper maintenance and safety insurance. Our pilots are all commercial and instrument rated, and have a minimum of 5,000 hours in bush planes like these.

ABOUT THE HUNTS

Kodiak Brown Bear

With a rich food source at the Tsiu River, these brown bears get big! We have taken many bears exceeding 10-feet over the years, and with skulls over 28”. On the Tsiu, we hunt April through May, and September through October. The Tsiu area permits each hunter to harvest one brown bear each regulatory year, which does not count against the harvest of one brown bear every four years, as is the case in other parts of Alaska.

Black Bear

With plenty of food near the coastal areas of Cordova, our black bear have always been plentiful in the Cordova area, both during the spring and fall hunts. As always, we have goals, trying to achieve a 6-foot or better bear, with an occasional 8-footer taken. These hunts are conducted 1x1 (one guide, one client) to ensure your ultimate success.

Alaskan Moose

Depending on where you are hunt in the Cordova area, both client and guide are transported by the use of small aircraft the day before your hunt begins. We use the same tents (8x8 feet), heaters, and cots as with our other hunts. Moose country is very flat in this area and can be dry, but normally is wet and boggy.

Rocky Mountain Goat

The mountain goat population in our Cordova hunting area is one of the healthiest in the state, with some of our horn genetics being one of the best in Alaska. We strive to harvest Billie’s 8.5 inches or better. Our average has been 9 inches (or better) in recent years, with a few in the 11-inch class. We have 2 classes of Billie’s in our area; “normal” Billies that weigh 285 to 325 pounds, and the larger “Buffalo” Billie’s that can weigh nearly 400 pounds, due to some differing genetics.

Sitka Blacktail Deer

The Sitka Blacktail deer on Kodiak usually weigh between 150 to 200 pounds. Deer can be hunted from a small cabin or spike camp from my guide use area on the south end of Kodiak Island. Spike camps are portable, so we can move to the best possible hunt areas. Our tents are 8 feet square, and equipped with cots and heaters. In August and September, you can find bucks up high on mountain ridges, around 500 to 1,500 feet in elevation. In October and November, they move down to the foothills, which makes hunting easier.

Wing Shooting

Ptarmigan hunts take place on the lower tundra and above 2,000 feet in elevation. Many of the areas hunted for ptarmigan provide spectacular views. An Alaska bird hunt is more than just a bird hunt, it’s an experience on some of the most adventurous and untouched terrains on earth.
